The Historic City of Rye located on the Long Island Sound has continually played a significant role in Westchester County’s growth and regional stature. Its thriving central business district, defined mainly by Purchase Street, retains a vibrant mix of restaurants, high-end retail, and mom-and-pop stores. The city recognized that it needed to upgrade its infrastructure and streetscape to create a safe pedestrian friendly downtown environment. The City hired IQ to evaluate streetscape elements such as lighting, furnishings, street trees, and pavements. Handicapped accessibility, traffic calming measures, as well as pedestrian connections to rear parking lots were also studied. A comprehensive design along with detailed design and construction guidelines will provide the City’s planning and Engineering Departments with a plan that may be coordinated with other traffic and infrastructure improvements, and be implemented as the need arises and funding allows.
