New York Medical College, one of the largest private health science universities in the nation, has retained IQ Landscape Architects to prepare a comprehensive master plan for its Westchester County campus. The college has a unique history, founded by a group of noted social leaders in the mid 1800’s which included renowned editor of the New York Post, William Cullen Bryant.
One of the institution’s guiding principles was to provide alternative, homeopathic methods to treating patients. The campus also once housed tuberculosis treatment facilities, one for adults and one for children.
IQ prepared designs for several campus spaces and gardens which recalls and reinforces the colleges’ original philosophical goals and rich history through the integration of interpretive elements, signage, and the reuse of historical artifacts. A campus wide pedestrian circulation system was prepared by the firm, which link to academic buildings and student housing. Entry pillars and signage walls create gateways for NYMC, identifying its edges and boundaries within the Grasslands campus.
